NYES REACHES TWO CONSTRUCTION MILESTONES

The New York Energy Solution (NYES), an electric transmission modernization project through portions of Rensselaer, Columbia and Dutchess counties, has reached two major construction milestones with the rebuild and energization of the Churchtown Switching Station in Claverack and the installation and energization of 22 miles of new transmission structures and lines.

“As we near the half-way point in our 55-mile project, and just a little over a year after the start of construction, the energization of the Churchtown Station and of the Schodack-to-Claverack portion of our new transmission line epitomize how our team is going about its work – safely, efficiently and with minimal disruption to our neighbors,” said Vic Mullin, president of New York Transco, NYES developer. “We remain on-schedule for a 2023 in-service date and look forward to completing this important contribution to New York’s clean energy future.”

The NYES project is an integral part of New York State’s historic effort to rebuild and enhance the State’s electric energy delivery system to achieve 70 percent renewable energy by 2030, and 100 percent zero[1]emissions energy by 2040.

New York Transco and its partners with New York’s Local 1249 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers are replacing 80-year-old transmission structures in an existing transmission corridor with 230 fewer new monopoles, which are engineered to be stronger and more weather-resistant. The monopoles will carry a new 345kV transmission line capable of carrying greater amounts of renewable energy from generating sources to New York homes and businesses. The project team is also constructing, rebuilding or upgrading a series of substations along the corridor.

“To see such important parts of the project coming together exactly as envisioned is exciting for the future of renewable energy in New York State,” said New York Transco Senior Project Manager Lisa Kettle. “It’s especially rewarding that these achievements have occurred in time to celebrate International Women in Engineering Day on June 23. I am so proud of the contributions that I and other female engineers are making to this and many other infrastructure projects, and I hope we’re serving as inspiration to girls and young women who share our interest in making things work and making the world a better place.”
